Dr Megan-Jane Johnstone AO is an emerging contemporary artist who resides in Melbourne. Self-taught, she works in mixed media using water-based paints (watercolour, gouache, acrylic) and acrylic inks. Her paintings encompass contemporary and abstract expressions of iconic landscapes found in New Zealand (where she grew up) and outback regions of Australia through which she has travelled extensively.
To develop her art practice Megan-Jane has undertaken several on-line courses and face-to-face workshops with professional artists including Stefan Gevers (contemporary watercolour), VAS Brock Piper (abstract acrylic & gouache), Amanda Hyatt (watercolour),VAS Nathan Paramanathan (oil and acrylic), and renowned contemporary NZ Artist Colin Gibbs (acrylic). Exhibitions where her works have been shown include: A1 Darebin Art Salon 2020; Contemporary Art Society of Victoria A4 Art Show 2020; Moonee Ponds Virtual Art Show 2020; Mornington Art Exhibition 2020; Linden Postcard Show 2019; Whitehorse Art Show 2019; VAS Winter Select Exhibition 2019; VAS Spring Select Exhibition 2019. Other works accepted for exhibition are currently ‘on hold’ due to COVID-19 cancellations, including her first solo exhibition which was due to be held at the Darebin Arts Centre in October 2020.
Megan’s work is inspired by a deep emotional attachment to the land and her profound interest in the beauty and structure of the natural landscape. The images depicted in her works are informed either by direct observation or from memory of specific places at specific times and dates.
