Gregory's observational skills have been honed from a career as a research scientist, and from extensive travel photography. Gregory started drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil, and got his first Kodak Instamatic 104 at age 12. He has been using these two methods to capture images for most of his 62 years, though the materials and machines have been upgraded many times. His works include sea and landscapes, portraits and street photography, but small ships and coastal waterways are a repeating theme. He finds inspiration in maritime history and the stories of everyday people interacting with the sea. He has experimented with watercolour throughout his life, working en plein air often, but has only recently started to focus on this medium, being inspired by great Australian watercolourists like Hans Heysen and John Woodland. Formal training has been sporadic but includes a University of Newcastle Natural History Illustration course, and casual sketching sessions at Melbourne's NGV with well-respected artists such as Debra Luccio and Yvette Coppersmith. His interests include Australian martime history, and particularly how our waterways have affected and enriched the lives of indigenous and non-indigenous Australians alike.
