Proteas Blue

Description : Using Fluid acrylics to create a washy blue green background. It creates depth and texture behind the botanical illustrated proteas, painted in white outlines. Blues and green, evoke a cool and contemporary mood, In surreal colours for flowers that proteas dominate with their size and sturdiness. That such a flower is named after a god, seems fully befitting.

My background education is in Graphic Design and Fine art in Melbourne.  My arts studio is based in the Dandenong Ranges.  I am a participating artist in Dandenong Ranges Open Studios since 2012.

The uniqueness of Australian landscape, flora and fauna is my artistic inspiration. I study this through genres of still-life and botanical works as well as bird studies and of course landscapes.

I love the challenge of expressing on canvas or paper things that inspire me, foliage, seeds, textures, different light or seasons. I explore the emotional resonance of colours and the expressive qualities of mark-making to create the mood of a painting. I enjoy plein air field work because it is quick and fluid, allowing only the essence of the place to come through. My studio process involves balancing aesthetic qualities such as composition, colour and light with spontaneity of mark and the movement of paint, allowing and guiding the work to emerge in its own form.
